TECHNOLOGY SEMINAR :WEB BASED LEARNING AND CLOUD COMPUTING
INTRODUCTION
The
World Wide Web is increasingly being used for communication between
applications. The topic of the seminar is web based learning and cloud learning
.There are two sections in the seminar .The first section contains web based learning,
Education through internet and types of eLearning: Synchronous eLearning and
asynchronous eLearning. Now the second section consists of cloud computing and
characteristics of cloud computing. I have tried to look these topics from
different websites. These technologies allow applications using differing
languages and platforms to interface in a familiar way.
WEB
BASED LEARNING AND CLOUD LEARNING
Web
based learning is often called online learning or e-learning because it
includes online course content. Discussion forums via email, videoconferencing,
and live lectures (video streaming) are all possible through the web. Web based
courses may also provide static pages such as printed course materials.
Web-based learning refers to the type of learning that uses the Internet as an
instructional delivery tool to carry out various learning activities. It can
take the form of (1) a pure online learning in which the curriculum and
learning are implemented online without face-to-face meeting between the
instructor and the students, or (2) a hybrid in which the instructor meets the
students half of the time online and half of the time in the classroom,
depending on the needs and requirement of the curriculum. Web-based learning
can be integrated into a curriculum that turns into a full-blown course or as a
supplement to traditional courses.
Cloud learning is starting to be looked
at seriously by many educational institutions as a replacement or supplement to
their traditional teaching practices. One of the main reasons is as a means of
reducing expensive IT costs while providing a service that is easily accessible
from any kind of device. Another advantage of Cloud learning is that it allows
for context-based communication and collaboration instead of a standard
point-to-point communication practice that is used in traditional practices.
The user is able to take this information to personalize and customize their
learning experience to meet their own personal needs. The user is able to increase connections,
interactions and sharing in a Cloud learning environment which allows for
effective learning.
WEB
BASED LEARNING
Web base learning (sometimes called as
e-learning) is anywhere, any-time instruction delivered over the Internet or a
corporate-intranet to browser equipped learners. There are two primary models of web-based
Instruction: synchronous (instructor-facilitated) and asynchronous
(self-directed), self-paced).
Instruction can be delivered by a combination of static methods
(learning portals, hyperlinked pages, screen cam tutorials, streaming
audio/video, and live web broadcasts) and interactive methods (threaded
discussions chats and desk-top video conferencing.
EDUCATION THROUGH
INTERNET
Ø In
a sense all use of Internet is educative as it involves access to information
and contains huge quantities of data on numerous topics.
Ø Internet
has information on most of the advanced research topics in highly technical or
scientific areas besides information on very petty topics.
Ø The
use of the Internet could provide wider access to good quality education at low
cost.
Ø Internet
provides information and education to the wider population located in every
nook and corner of the globe.
Ø Internet
may be considered as tool to disseminate large quantities of information, to
propel the masses forward on a path of prosperity in the shortest possible time
with minimum resources.
Ø Internet
technology can be very helpful in removing adversities of nature or the
adversities faced by human because of their caste or creeds.
Ø The
learning process on internet is interesting and interactive.
Ø The
students have a great opportunity to be creative.
THE
INTERNRT USE WOULD REMOVE THE LIMITATION OF;
ü Classroom
size
ü Fixed
timing of imparting education.
ü Restrictions
on learner are pace of learning.
ü Learner’s
ability to afford quality education at the best school, college or university
anywhere in the world.
THE
INTERNET CAN SUPPORT THE FOLLOWING TYPES OF EDUCATION
v Schooling
v Continuing
education
v Re-skilling
or re-education
v Task
specific immediate education
There is no doubt that the Internet offers
the unique opportunity of providing education at a fast pace.
Internet has varied educational uses. Even a well-established traditional library
can hardly match the resources available on the Net.
This is not to say that the Internet can
take the place on earth has the financial resources to buy the latest
international books on everything under the sun. This is where the Net comes handy for
students, teachers, and researchers as well as for those preparing for several
examinations including civil Service Examination.
TYPES
OF E-LEARNING
Synchronous
eLearning
Synchronous
learning refers to a learning event in which a group of students are engaging
in learning at the same time
Just
like a classroom or group study (using any electronic device).
E.g.
Lectures & Webinars, Videoconference or Group chat
Asynchronous
eLearning
In
an asynchronous learning environment student are able to actively participate
in their own learning.
Asynchronous
learning can be carried out even while the student is offline.
E.g.
e-Mail, Social site/blog, wiki, LMS & CMS and Moodle
CLOUD
COMPUTING
Cloud computing is the practice of using a
network of remote servers hosted on the Internet to store, manages, and process
data, rather than a local server or a personal computer. Cloud computing is defined as a type of
computing that relies on sharing computing resources rather than having local
servers or personal devices to handle applications. Cloud computing is comparable to grid
computing, a type of computing where unused processing cycles of all computers
in a network are harnesses to solve problems too intensive for any stand-alone
machine.
In cloud computing, the world cloud (also
phrased as “the cloud”) is used as a metaphor for “the Internet”, so the phrase
cloud computing,” Where different services-such as servers, storage and
applications-are delivered to an organization‘s computers and devices through
the Internet. In the simplest terms,
cloud computing means storing and accessing data and programs over the Internet
instead of your computer’s hard drive.
Cloud computing, or in simpler shorthand just” the cloud”, also focuses
on maximizing the effectiveness of the shared resources. Cloud resources are usually not only shared
by multiple users but are also dynamically reallocated per demand. This can work for allocating resources to
users. For example, a cloud computer
facility that serves European users during European business hours with a
different application (email) may reallocate the same resources to serve North
America’s business hours with a different application (e.g: a web server). This approach should maximize the use of
computing power thus reducing environmental damage as well since less power,
air conditioning, rack, space etc. are required for a variety of
functions. With cloud computing,
multiple users can access a single server to retrieve and update their data without
their data without purchasing licenses for different applications.
EXAMPLES
OF CLOUD COMPUTING: Microsoft One Drive, Office Online, Google Drive, Apple
iCloud, Amazon Cloud Drive.
CHARECTERISTIC
OF CLOUD COMPUTING:
ü On
– demand self-service, On-demand self-service means that customers usually
organisations0 can request and manage their own computing resources.
ü Broad
network access, Broad network access allows services to be offered over the
Internet or private networks.
ü Resource
pooling, pooled resources means that customers draw from a pool of computing
resources, usually in remote data centers.
ü Rapid
elasticity services can be scaled larger or smaller.
ü Measured
service. Use of a service is measured
and customers are billed accordingly.
DEPLOYMENT
OF CLOUD SERVICES;
Cloud
services are typically made available via
A
private cloud:
In
a private cloud, the cloud infrastructure is operated solely for a specific
organization, and is managed by the organization or a third party.
Community
cloud:
In
a community cloud, the service is shared by several organizations and made
available only to those groups.
Public
cloud:
Generally
speaking, services provided by a public cloud are offered over the Internet and
are owned and operated by a cloud provider.
Some examples include services aimed at the general public, such as
online photo storage services, e-mail services, e-mail services, or social
networking.
CONCLUSION
Technology
is completely revolutionizing the way organizations communicate .Thus, as
explained in the seminar. Web based learning and cloud computing plays an
important role in the teaching - learning process. Web-based learning resources
(WBLRs) are potentially powerful tools for enhancing teaching and learning
processes in school education. They can provide teachers and learners with a
wide range of new and exciting experiences that are not possible in a
traditional classroom. However, WBLRs are still the domain of technical and
software experts rather than teachers and learners. As a result, much of the
development of WBLRs is carried out without a true understanding of issues
pertinent to learning and pedagogy.
Cloud computing and education sounds
ambiguous on the face of it. Naturally, it’s because, very
Few
individuals, publishers and users alike come from the education sector. In most
cases, cloud
Computing
is only associated with businesses and how they can leverage their
efficiencies. Just to introduce how the cloud deserves a place in our current
education institution, it’s important to reiterate the education philosophy.
Its essence is knowledge. It’s this knowledge which brings advancement,
achievement and success. However, there are several things which make these
parameters unattainable. In blunt language, this is failure. Small classrooms,
lack or resources, short-handed staff, lack of adequate teachers…the list is
endless. One way or the other, cloud computing can be utilized to improve
education standards and activities. The end result will be to curb the above
problems and instead, boost performance.
